Milton Keynes Lightning #71 Harry Gulliver
The DRS review requested by Leeds Knights is upheld.
A DRS review was requested of an incident during the 3rd period of the game at 51:00 of the Milton Keynes Lightning v Leeds Knights game.
The puck is in the Leeds Defending zone and has been passed into the corner of the rink. Leeds#8 is the first player to react and skates toward the puck from his position by the end zone face off spot. He is followed by MK#71. As the puck closes on the boards #8 plays the puck and is hit from behind by #71, who extends his arms driving #8 forwards into the boards, who in turn twists as he does, impacting the boards in the right shoulder area.
#71 could see the back of #8 and had time to alter his approach to check the player differently. He chose to hit #8 from behind, who did not deliberately turn his back or put himself in a vulnerable position. The check from #71 causes reckless endangerment and the force used was minimal
43.1. CHECKING FROM BEHIND
A check from behind is a check delivered to a vulnerable Player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend themself from such a hit and contact is made on the back part of the body.
A Player who hits an opponent from behind into the boards, the goal frame, or on open ice in any manner (i.e., high-sticking, crosschecking, etc.) shall be penalized according to this rule.
43.3. MAJOR PENALTY AND GAME MISCONDUCT PENALTY
The Referee, at their discretion, shall assess a major penalty and an automatic game misconduct penalty to a Player guilty of “checking from behind” an opponent, and who recklessly endangers the fouled Player.
43.4. DISCIPLINARY MEASURES
If deemed appropriate, Supplementary Discipline can be applied by the Proper Authorities at their discretion.
The player will be suspended for 1 game and 0 points will be added to his playing record. The Team will receive 5 penalty points.
Total Games suspended is 1 game.
